Highlights
Why Starcloud
Starcloud is a U.S.-based technology company that created the category of orbital data centers, designed to deliver artificial intelligence computing infrastructure in space. The company is building large-scale computing in orbit that draws on continuous solar power and radiative cooling, with the ability to scale without the land, energy and permitting constraints of terrestrial data centers.
Starcloud-1 launched in November 2025 carrying what the company describes as the first NVIDIA H100 GPU in orbit, and subsequently became the first spacecraft to train a large language model in space.
Starcloud was founded in 2024 by Philip Johnston, Ezra Feilden, and Adi Oltean, and is a Y Combinator company. In August 2026, Starcloud announced a USD $250 million Series A extension at a reported USD $2.3 billion post-money valuation, led by Manhattan West with participation from NVIDIA, Cisco Investments, Benchmark, EQT, Soma, NFX, and 776. The financing brings Starcloud's total capital raised to approximately USD $450 million. Planet Ventures holds an indirect position in Starcloud through ST-0504 Fund I.

The Opportunity
Why data centers are moving to space
The growth of artificial intelligence is creating extraordinary demand for computing power and energy. Starcloud believes orbital data centers can offer continuous access to solar power, radiative cooling, and the ability to scale computing infrastructure without the land, energy and permitting constraints of terrestrial facilities.
As launch vehicles continue to bring down the cost per kilogram to orbit, the company believes orbital data centers are approaching a break-even point where they become cheaper to build than data centers on Earth.
